Tennis is a unique sport at the recreational level in that players are often called upon to use their judgment to determine whether an opponent’s shot is in or out. There are several suggestions players should follow to ensure they call a match fairly and to minimize disputes regarding line calls.
First and foremost, any call that an individual is not completely certain about should be made in favor of the opponent. Similarly, any ball that a player does not see should be called in. This guideline applies to all shots, even a lob that soars high overhead and likely landed several feet beyond the baseline.
Any out call, including service faults, should be made immediately and clearly. While calls should be made in favor of the opponent, players are encouraged not to dispute any call that goes against them. It is acceptable to ask “Are you sure about that?” after a questionable call, but beyond that, players are asked to accept all calls and move forward with the match, regardless of their feelings about their opponent’s officiating.
There are several related aspects of tennis etiquette that can help reduce tension. For instance, if a player calls a ball out, then corrects themselves, then the players can replay the point. Any subsequent point that follows this pattern should be ruled against the player who admits to making an incorrect call.
